Archaelogy tells us that they were originally closed structures though now they are much more enigmatic as they take the form of three-legged quoits or Giant’s tables or whatever. I feel that the solitary stones needed to be open to the elements to allow their message if any to pass to their Gods, ancestors or whoever.
